Word Arrangement

Major Creative Project · Hand lettering

We were supposed to create a composition using only two words. I took “Dumb and Dumber” and built it entirely by hand, starting with thumbnails and working up to a tight pencil comp before inking the final.

Tasked with using two different fonts I wanted to use a bulky font against the script to capture the intent behind my comedic choice.

Process

Notebook page of small pencil thumbnails testing different arrangements of the words Dumb and Dumber
Thumbnails. Testing arrangements before committing to one.
Refined pencil comp of the Dumb and Dumber lettering, drawn at full size

Final

Finished hand-lettered piece reading Dumb and Dumber, heavy block capitals paired with a flowing script, inside an inked splash shape

Postcard Design

Major Creative Project · Layout, illustration, mailer

The assignment was to create a postcard as an invitation to an event. The event was the International Fashion Show at Stromfield. I started from a reference photo of a skater, drew it down to line art, built a value study, then color, then dropped it into a layout with the event details.

Process

Digital Ad Series

Creative Project · Campaign, type as image

The intent of this assignment was to make three Instagram ads for a reptile shop, built as a set.

I filled the letterforms with photographic texture from the animals themselves, so the type is the image. The hard part was making three ads feel like one campaign without completely copying each other.

Process

Pencil thumbnails roughing out four social ad layouts with headline placement
Thumbnails, working out headline placement across the set.

Final

Instagram ad reading It's turtelly fine, we'll get there, with letterforms filled with turtle shell texture
“It’s turtelly fine.”
Instagram ad reading You won't get fur all over your couch, with letterforms filled with snake scale texture
“You won’t get fur all over your couch.”
Instagram ad reading Check your local leash laws, with letterforms filled with reptile skin texture
“Check your local leash laws.”

Newsletter Project

Final Project · Grid systems, multi-page layout

The theme I chose for my Newsletter was New York City. What I have to show is only the research and planning stage: pages of layout thumbnails, an example of photos and word placement, and the color direction I landed on.

This project is still in progress. The pages below are the planning work, not a finished newsletter.
